New iPad and Compatibility with iPad apps

Is the New iPad compatible with my old iPad apps?  Do I need to buy new apps to use on the Retina display?

Some apps have already been enhanced for retina display, but all previous (Un-enhanced) apps would work just fine on the new iPad.
